DR. REIDL HONOURED WITH SENIOR’S AWARD
February 2013
By John Phair
Dr. Frank Reidl, a long-time Petrolia physician, was recently honoured by Petrolia Council with the presentation of the Ontario Senior Citizen’s Achievement Award.
The award, which allows municipalities to nominate deserving individuals within their community, is made available through the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and honours people who continue to make an outstanding contribution to their community after the
age of 65.
Making the presentation at a recent council meeting, Mayor John McCharles noted that
Dr. Riedl has been a tireless worker and advocate on behalf of maintaining local health care services. McCharles noted that over the years Dr. Reidl has worked diligently with Charlotte’s Task Force, Bluewater Health and the Erie-St. Clair Local Health Integration Network (LHIN)
to ensure services at CEEH’s emergency department remain open on a 24/7 basis. He added that Dr. Reidl was very instrumental in the community’s success in keeping the local emergency department open. “He’s a man of few words but when he speaks people listen,” said the mayor.
Dr. Frank Reidl grew up on a farm in St. Clair Township and attended a one-room school at Beecher. He later graduated from Wallaceburg District High School and went on to study general
medicine at the University of Western Ontario.
After graduating in 1965, he served a one-year residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London,
where he met his future wife Lynne, who was a nurse there. “At that time I was looking for a place to practice and Dr. Harold Shabsove called me and suggested I come to Petrolia and
the next thing you know here we were,” he said, adding that he came to Petrolia in 1967 and was married the following year.
While Dr. Reidl continues to run a busy practice with offices in both Petrolia and Alvinston, he obviously isn’t entertaining any thoughts of slowing down. “A lot of people might have the impression that I'm retiring, but I’m not,” he said.
