Arts, Culture & Events
Arts & Culture abound in Petrolia from Victoria Playhouse, where the lobby is also an art gallery featuring the work of local artists to the stores that feature art and antiques, framing, custom photography etc. The Petrolia Community Theatre group stages two productions a year at Victoria Playhouse, the Library is very active with cultural programming and the Lambton Young Theatre Players showcase the talent of the young people of the community in their productions. Art in the park showcases local artists in July and if you visit in the fall, the annual Scarecrow Festival is sure to pique your interest as handmade scarecrows are strategically placed throughout town to greet visitors and residents.

Victoria Playhouse Petrolia (VPP) is a 400 seat state-of-the-art theatre housed in historic Victoria Hall in the center of Petrolia’s Victorian downtown. The VPP Summer Festival is the main event happening on stage and includes six different productions per year running for a period of three weeks each from mid-May through mid-September. There are also other professional and community events presented at VPP throughout the year. For more information visit the website.
Ten years ago, a few local people were eager to provide a venue for local artists to show their talents and at the same time add to the experience for those visiting Victoria Hall.
What began as three art shows during the summer, has grown to a year round program. The art displays are available for viewing any time Victoria Hall is open.
An important aspect of this program is the opportunity given to local elementary schools and L.C.C.V.I. to show student work each year.
For our 10th Anniversary year, we are hosting our first Juried show in October with the theme “Celebrating Lambton through Art”. Current members of our committee are Anna May Aldous, Karen Campbell, Laurissa Ellsworth, Sylvia Fairbank, Ariel Lyons, Cathy O’Hara, Linda Smith, Councillor Liz Welsh, and Councillor Mary-Pat Gleeson.
Art in the Park Petrolia….and the perfect day! As you enter beautiful, historic Victoria Park you are struck by the diversity of the art under the canopies; the music in the air; the smiles of people enjoying the sights and sounds and the magnificent roses in full bloom. You can meet the artists; buy the perfect Christmas gift; spot a bag to match your new coat and sign-up for stained glass lessons. It’s time for a quick lunch from one of the food vendors while you listen to a local guitar player on the band shell. Checking the entertainment schedule, you decide to call your friends to meet you to watch the dancers, and perhaps treat yourselves to some ice cream or fudge. The children are busy creating at the Children’s art tent or watching the magician, so time for another shady walk around, this time stopping to watch the potter at her wheel. A nearby artist has the perfect painting for your office, another a perfect birthday present for your niece. Art in the Park Petrolia….and the perfect day!
Event date: 2nd full weekend in July
