Petrolia Farmers’ Market Opening Delayed While New Safety Measures Are Put in Place

The open-air Petrolia Farmers’ Market, scheduled to open Saturday, May 16, 2020, will be delayed while staff work with vendors to make changes to safety protocols and work with Lambton Public Health to limit social gathering at the site.

For more than a decade, the Petrolia Farmers’ Market and the Kerr Café have opened the weekend prior to Victoria Day Weekend and observed a week of “soft opening” prior to the annual Grand Opening Community BBQ and Celebrations. This year, the Market will look a little different. Physical distancing requirements and limits to social gathering will see the Kerr Café closed until further notice, and when the Market does open, there will be new rules for patrons to observe for the safety of themselves and our vendors.

“At this time, we are working to get the Market open safely.” Said Dave Menzies, Director of Community Services. “We are working on creating new traffic patterns for patrons and safety protocols for vendors and patrons.  Limiting social gathering is one of our biggest challenges and changing of the layout of the Market is just one of the details that we are working on to help combat that concern.”

Farmers’ Markets in Ontario are identified as essential services, but provincial requirements for public safety have changed some of the parameters around operations.  The biggest changes involve changing the layout and limiting vendors to food only. For vendors, the prepackaging and pre-pricing will change how many conduct sales.

Once the new regulations and layout have been tested and Lambton Public Health approves the changes, we will open for the season.  A new starting date will be available soon, residents are thanked for their patience as we navigate these changes.
