BOTTLE AND CAN DRIVE BENEFITTING HOSPITAL AN INCREDIBLE SUCCESS
Posted: June 24, 2020
The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department collected returnable bottles and cans over two evenings in May with proceeds earmarked to support the Charlotte Eleanor Englehart (CEE) Hospital Foundation for assistance with their capital fundraising project for CEE Hospital renovations and upgrades.
The sorting, counting packaging, and preparation for return was undertaken by volunteers from the Town of Petrolia staff, their immediate family members, and volunteers from the Town of Petrolia Community Services Committee. The donations took over 200, physically distanced, volunteer hours to prepare for pick up.
Fire Chief/Director of Protective Services, Jay Arns said, “When this idea was first discussed, we were thinking that even if we could raise $1,500 for the Petrolia hospital, we would be doing a good deed. At no time did the team of volunteers expect this kind of response from Petrolia and bordering neighbours in Enniskillen Township.”
Returns took 52 pallets, and three trucks from “The Beer Store” to remove for confirmation and recycling.
Some statistics about the Bottle and Can Drive:
115 Wine Bags
8,675 liquor and wine bottles
30,064 beer and cooler bottles
45,984 beer cans
TOTAL: 84,844 units
The total donation from Petrolia and neighbouring residents to the CEE Hospital Foundation (as confirmed by The Beer Store) is $9527.80.
A cheque presentation took place this morning, with Fire Chief, Jay Arns, Mark Braet of the CEE Hospital Foundation and sorting and counting team volunteer and Community Services Committee member, Barbara Prescott.
Mark Braet of the CEE Hospital Foundation was shocked by the donation, saying that, “Petrolia has never been a community to step down from a challenge and it’s plain to see that this is another example! Thank you for sharing your bottle returns with us, and we look forward to putting the dollars to good use for our renovations project.”
The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department hosted an online guessing contest, and the winner was to receive a $25 gift certificate for a Petrolia business of their choice. There were three winners tied with the closest guess (without going over) and they are: Jim Snyder, Yvette Lisa Lahaie Blomberg and Lauren MacNeil; each with a guess of $9500. The winners will each receive a $25 gift certificate to a Petrolia business of their choice.
