Parks and Recreation Master Plan

Parks and Recreation Master Plan

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan will establish a strategy that will guide decision-making over the next ten years. Through research and public input, the Master Plan will examine parks and recreation services and establish priorities that align with Council’s strategic priorities. The Master Plan will explore various topic areas including:

  • Indoor recreation facilities (e.g., pools, arenas, gymnasiums, meeting spaces, etc.);
  • Outdoor recreation facilities (e.g., sports fields, playgrounds, etc.);
  • Special events and spaces (e.g., Victoria Playhouse Petrolia); and
  • Parks, open spaces, and trails.

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan will be prepared through three project phases:

Phase 1 involves undertaking background research and community consultation, which will provide the basis for the Master Plan. This phase will involve a review of applicable background documents, analysis of the community’s demographic profile, research on relevant trends, preparing inventories and mapping of the Town’s parks and recreation assets (including Victoria Playhouse Petrolia), and obtaining community input into the Master Plan.

Timing: October to December 2019

Phase 2 includes a number of assessments, including parkland, trails and open space needs; recreation facility needs; programming and delivery needs; and a benchmarking of rates and fees. This phase will result in a draft Parks and Recreation Master Plan (with draft implementation plan).

Timing: January to March 2020

Phase 3 provides an opportunity to test the draft Master Plan with the community prior to finalizing the document for Town Council’s consideration.

Timing: April 2020
