Petrolia Compost Transfer Site in Petrolia to Open June 6 – No Passes Required

Posted: May 25, 2020

At the regular meeting of Petrolia Council on Monday, May 25, 2020 the previously approved dates for the Petrolia Compost Transfer Site were permitted to proceed.

For the 2020 season, the Compost Transfer Site will still be located at the Waste Management Depot at 4485 Progress Drive, Petrolia.  Should the approvals be received from the Ministry of the Environment, and with Council approval,  during the season for the Town to operate a Transfer Site on Maude Street, the transfer site would be re-located for continued compost site transfer services for the remainder of the season.

In observation of the COVID-19 restrictions in place, there will be a few changes to the operation of the site for the safety of residents and Waste Management staff.

  • Two Waste Management staff will be present to monitor the site, and direct traffic
  • Required physical distancing of 2 metres/6 feet will be enforced
  • Waste Management staff will not be able to interact and assist residents to dispose of compost
  • due to physical distancing requirements, and gathering limitations of five people or less, there will be no Town of Petrolia staff on site to assist with compost disposal

We appreciate the patience of residents during the delayed opening.  As always, the health and safety of our residents, staff and community partners is paramount.

Proof of a Petrolia address is required to access the transfer site, however, there will be no cost to residents to access the site for 2020.  No passes will be required.

Curbside Wood Chipping and Brush Chipping continues for 2020 and includes: tree limbs, and branches not exceeding 4″ in diameter.  These items can be placed curbside and the Town chipper will come by and process on site.  Brush must be in a tidy and neat pile with cut ends facing the curb a maximum of ten feet wide by five feet high, with no length restriction.

Effective January 1, 2020, residents are required to use paper compost bags when bringing items to the compost transfer site.  The bags can then be deposited into the bins for recycling.  Another option for residents, is to use a re-usable container that is taken back after depositing the compostable materials.

Curbside wood chipping is not street specific; residents can place their brush at the curb on any of these days and it will be processed.  Residents are asked to place the brush no sooner than 4:00 p.m. the night before a collection date, and to have all brush at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the day of collection.  Residents are reminded to not impede sidewalk access.  If any brush piles have root bulbs attached, contain waste, or other non-organic items the brush pile will not be processed, and the resident will be responsible for disposal.

Curbside wood chipping will continue, with added precautions under COVID-19, in observation of proper health and safety protocols for physical distancing, we will be asking residents to refrain from interacting with public works staff while they are working and forward any questions to Town Hall at (519)882-2350.
