*** Petrolia Compost Depot Offers Residents Eight Dates to Dispose of Compost Items***
Petrolia residents will have eight opportunities to discard their yard and garden waste this year, with the first opportunity taking place on April 22, 2017. This good news comes after the announcement of the immediate closure of the Compost Site in Petrolia. The first compost depot event of the season coincides with Earth Day, a day set to bring awareness to the environment and to connect people to nature.
On April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Petrolia residents are welcome to bring grass clippings, weeds and brush items to the Waste Management site at 4485 Progress Drive, Petrolia, where a staff member from Waste Management and the Town of Petrolia will be present to check for both proof of residency via Driver’s License and to assist with the disposal of approved items. This one day compost depot will be free of charge.
Further to the event on April 22, staff have come up with a solution for residents for the remainder of 2017 that includes the addition of the following seven Saturday dates from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.:
• Saturday, May 6, 2017
• Saturday, May 27, 2017
• Saturday, June 17, 2017
• Saturday, July 15, 2017
• Saturday, September 16, 2017
• Saturday, October 21, 2017
• Saturday, November 4, 2017
Use of the compost facility for the May 6 to November 4 dates will be for Petrolia residents only, and will require a punch pass that affords the owner the opportunity to visit the depot once on each of the seven dates. The punch pass will be $20, and is available for purchase at Town Hall. For residents that have already purchased the 2017 pass, they can be simply exchanged at the Depot on April 22, or by visiting Town Hall. Residents will be required to present their punch pass and Driver’s License to the attendant to gain entry to the compost depot.
“We are proud to partner with Waste Management to offer this solution to the residents of Petrolia for 2017. Staff will be closely monitoring the eight events to ensure that the services offered are meeting the needs of our residents.” Said Manny Baron, Chief Administrative Officer. This solution for 2017 does not impact the budget set to operate the original compost site for the year, as the operation of the depot falls within the approved budgeted amount.
Staff will be revisiting curbside autumn leaf collection as part of the solution to the closure of the Compost Site, and as the time approaches, residents will be made aware of the details regarding leaf collection.
