Letter to Residents from Mayor R. Brad Loosley – May 15, 2020
Posted: May 15, 2020
As we head into Victoria Day Weekend, recognizing that physical distancing will remain in full effect, a company called “snapd” has created a virtual fireworks experience delivered through their augmented reality (AR) platform. Their hope is to give people something uplifting and shared to enjoy together even while we are apart. Simply, you have to download the snapd HUB app and use the AR lens to view the fireworks from your backyard, balcony or wherever you find yourself. I have added two links to the bottom of this letter to help you download the app and view the virtual fireworks.
Our Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department is hosting a bottle and can drive on Tuesday, May 19 and Wednesday, May 20 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and residents are asked to please place their empty beer, liquor and wine bottles at the curb on those dates in bags or boxes for them to collect. The proceeds from the bottle and can drive will be donated to the C.E.E. Hospital Foundation. Volunteers collecting these items will be pre-screened before helping and have asked that I remind residents of physical distancing requirements during the curbside collection.
Follow the Town of Petrolia on Facebook to participate in the weekly “Community Spirit Events” where we are having all kinds of stay home fun building replicas of Victoria Hall, contributing to a Quarantine Cookbook, and much more! All the events are family-friendly and encourage creativity and positivity in a time where this is very important.
Staff have provided many alternative options for property owners accustomed to paying their taxes in person. Property owners will find this information in the COVID-19 section at www.town.petrolia.on.ca .
Council continues to meet by video, and it is going very well. Residents are reminded to access the link on the Town’s website (above), and to learn about how to address Council if needed as well. Staff remain available by telephone (519)882-2350 or e-mail to assist residents and answer questions. The Petrolia Municipal office will be closed on Monday, May 18, 2020 in observation of Victoria Day so that staff may take a break at home with their families.
As more of our downtown is permitted to open with the option of curbside service, our food, garden and hardware retailers are able to extend hours, and while take out and delivery continues from our restaurants we encourage you to think local first. Buy items that you need from Petrolia whenever possible. The money you spend in our community will help your neighbours, and now is a particularly important time to support them.
I am so proud of the way Petrolia has come together as a community. Thank you for helping your neighbours, and for following the safety guidelines to maintain the health and wellness of our residents. Until next week, I wish you continued good health and wellness.
