Greenwood Recreation Centre, Petrolia Grand Re-Opening Scheduled!

Petrolia, ON – After the completion of the renovations and upgrades at Greenwood Recreation Centre, the Town of Petrolia is pleased to invite you to attend a celebration. The grand re-opening event will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. where families are invited to come and enjoy free public skating, and a free hot dog, pop, chips, and cake in celebration.  The Town of Petrolia will have some giveaways in celebration as well.  Director of Facilities and Community Services, Dave Menzies said, “We picked this date because it’s a P.D. Day and thought it would be a fun way to encourage families to get active.”

In 2017, the Town of Petrolia was a proud recipient of $274,500 for renovations at the Greenwood Recreation Centre in Petrolia.  The grant was from the Ontario 150 Community Capital Program being managed by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million.OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities. www.otf.ca

In 2017, the Ontario150 funding opportunity was announced as part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations.  A key component of the Ontario150 program is a series of one-time grants that municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Indigenous communities applied for across the province. These investments are intended to engage Ontarians of all ages and lay the groundwork for strong economic, social and cultural legacies for the province’s next 150 years. The funding, spread over 11 months, was used to make safety improvements by replacing rink boards, safety-netting and replacement of a compressor.  This initiative will foster a more active lifestyle, and will help infrastructure for unstructured and structured physical activities.  This project will directly, positively affect the lives of more than 16,000 people in the community.

Mayor John McCharles said, “…Our sincere thanks to the generosity of the Ontario150 Community Capital Program, this incredible gift to the town of Petrolia will secure our hockey and ice skating heritage for many years to come. We are so proud to have completed the updates to a facility that is at the heart of our community.”

Greenwood Recreation Centre was built in 1962, and this is the first time that the rink boards have been replaced.  The last major infrastructure upgrade was a change to the seating and an addition of an elevator in 2012.  Each year Greenwood Recreation Centre hosts many groups including Petrolia Minor Hockey Association, The Lambton Attack, Petrolia and District Skating Club, the Petrolia Squires, and the Petrolia Flyers.  In addition to these regular user groups, Learn to Skate, Adult Skate, and Public Skating take place in the winter months, and each year the International Silver Stick Tournament is hosted between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.   This project, spread over 11 months, will directly, positively affect the lives of more than 16,000 people in the community.

The project came in under budget by over $6000 and was completed on time.  The total investment in Greenwood Recreation Centre was $542,000 and included rink boards, bathroom upgrades, safety-netting, upgrades to the press box, improved audio equipment, enhanced Wi-Fi internet, new lobby seating, new flooring and doors, a new water bottle fill station donated by OCWA, and with thanks to Bluewater Power, a new score clock.

Should you go, the event will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. where families are invited to come and enjoy free public skating, and a free hot dog, pop, chips, and cake in celebration.  The Town of Petrolia will have some giveaways in celebration as well.
