COMPOST AND WOOD CHIPPING DATES SET BY COUNCIL; COMPOST DATES DELAYED BY COVID-19

At the regular meeting of Petrolia Council on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 dates for the Petrolia Compost Transfer Site and dates for Curbside Wood Chipping were approved for the 2020 season.  Due to the covid-19 health and safety requirements the Compost Transfer Site dates are on hold until approvals are in place for residents to visit the site.

For the 2020 season, the Compost Transfer Site will still be located at the Waste Management Depot at 4485 Progress Drive, Petrolia.  Should the approvals be received from the Ministry of the Environment, and with Council approval,  during the season for the Town to operate a Transfer Site on Maude Street, the transfer site would be re-located for continued compost site transfer services for the remainder of the season.

2020 APPROVED COMPOST TRANSFER SITE DATES:

Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – noon

May 2, 9 & 23

June 6, 20

July 11, 25

August 8, 22

September 12, 26

October 3, 17 & 24

Items that are accepted at the Compost Transfer Site include:

Yard Waste including leaves, grass clippings and garden waste

Brush including shrubs, hedges and woody stemmed plants

Items that will NOT be accepted include waste, recyclables, sod, sand, soil, building materials, stones, tree limbs and branches.

Once Town Hall has re-opened to the public, Compost Passes will be available for purchase for $20 for 20 visits to the transfer site.  Proof of a Petrolia address is required.

DUE TO COVID 19, all above compost dates are being placed on hold for the health and safety of Town staff and Waste Management staff.   There will be an announcement once the all-clear has been given for us to allow visitors to the Transfer Site.  In the meantime, we encourage all residents to practice mulching grass and back yard composting.

Curbside Wood Chipping and Brush Chipping: This service will continue for 2020 and includes: tree limbs, and branches not exceeding 4″ in diameter.  These items can be placed curbside and the Town chipper will come by and process on site.  Brush must be in a tidy and neat pile with cut ends facing the curb a maximum of ten feet wide by five feet high, with no length restriction.

The 2020 chipping dates will be:

Mondays and Tuesdays:

April 20, 21

May 19, 20

June 22, 23

July 20, 21

August 10, 11

September 14, 15

Curbside wood chipping is not street specific; residents can place their brush at the curb on any of these days and it will be processed.  Residents are asked to place the brush no sooner than 4:00 p.m. the night before a collection date, and to have all brush at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the day of collection.  Residents are reminded to not impede sidewalk access.  If any brush piles have root bulbs attached, contain waste, or other non-organic items the brush pile will not be processed, and the resident will be responsible for disposal.

Curbside wood chipping will continue, with added precautions under COVID 19, in observation of proper health and safety protocols for physical distancing, we will be asking residents to refrain from interacting with public works staff while they are working and forward any questions to Town Hall at (519)882-2350.

Effective January 1, 2020, residents are required to use paper compost bags when bringing items to the compost transfer site.  The bags can then be deposited into the bins for recycling.  Another option for residents, is to use a re-usable container that is taken back after depositing the compostable materials.
