Successful Day of Budget Deliberations in Petrolia – 0% Municipal Tax Rate Increase Proposed

Petrolia Town Council deliberated the draft 2020 municipal budget yesterday.  The proposed budget would see a proposed 0% increase to the Municipal tax rate, and a proposed 2.4% increase in sewer costs, with a proposed 2.4% increase to water rates.  The full day session concluded with Council providing direction to staff to amend the 2020 draft budget to reflect the following:

  1. The 2020 Municipal Fee Schedule was raised from the table and approved as presented at the October 15 Regular Meeting of Council.
  2. THAT the Council of the Town of Petrolia not proceed with the allocation of the Victoria Hall & Petrolia Library Nicol Funds in 2020 to LCCVI;

AND THAT the members of the LCCVI Nicol Committee complete a fundraising plan to sustain the fund for future generations;

AND THAT once that plan is received and presented to Council, consideration of the request from LCCVI will be reviewed again at that time.

3. That the Heritage Tax Rebate for eligible Heritage Designated properties be raised from a 10% rebate to 15% for 2020.

4. That the Municipal Grant request from the Petrolia-Lambton Army Cadets in the amount of $3000.00 not be approved.

5. That the Court Fines/Reports revenue line be increased from $2000 to $3000.

6. That the Tennis Court Maintenance line be reduced to $3000 from $5000.

Chief Administrative Officer/Treasurer, Rick Charlebois said, “Council and staff worked very hard today, addressing significant strategic issues for 2020.  Some great conversations took place about the future of Petrolia, proposed infrastructure projects and a high-level look at some proposed accessibility changes at Victoria Hall through an application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) Grant.  Overall, I am very happy with the way that deliberations have gone, and I am proud of the proposed 2020 Budget.  I would like to thank staff for their hard work in putting together an excellent budget for Council’s consideration.”

A Public Budget Meeting is planned for November 12, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall, Petrolia, where all are welcome.  The Public Meeting will feature a presentation by Chief Administrative Officer/Treasurer Rick Charlebois.  Staff plan to bring the proposed 2020 budget to Council on December 9, 2019.
