PETROLIA DAY COMBINED WITH FAMILY DAY IN PETROLIA – PROMISES TO BE A FUN-FILLED WEEKEND!

Posted: January 29, 2019

Petrolia – February in Petrolia means two things:  family and fun!  This year, February means even more.  The Community Services Department has combined two huge family events in to a fantastic Family Day weekend celebration called Petrolia Family Fun Days.  Events are planned throughout Petrolia February 15 – 18, 2019.

Petrolia Day, generally celebrated in August, home to many family activities has been moved to be combined with Family Day, a move that Dave Menzies, Director of Facilities and Community Services says, “…made sense for the service clubs, the Community Services Department and our volunteers for a variety of reasons.  The biggest reason for 2019 is the Tall Ships Festival in Sarnia – we want our residents to be able to make the most of that also.”  Sponsorship for the combined Family Day/Petrolia Day event started in December when D2 Entertainment pledged $1500 to cover the cost of two family films to be shown on the big screen in Victoria Hall.  Several other service clubs and sponsors have come forward, and the weekend schedule is full of promise with many free and low-cost events.

Monday, February 18 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline for submissions for the annual Snow Sculpture Contest as well.  Starting February 1 through February 18, Petrolia residents are asked to participate in a snow sculpture contest.  Each year has a different theme, and the 2019 theme is “Build Your Snow Family” meaning that if your family is two adults, three children, a dog and a cat, we want to see each of them represented using only snow, and a few props.  Director of Marketing, Arts and Communications, Laurissa Ellsworth said, “…It’s one of my favourite activities in Petrolia, I love seeing how creative our residents can be…especially the years’ that we don’t get any snow.”  In 2016, temperatures were so warm that the Community Services Department made a last-minute switch to run a “Summer in February Photo Contest” which Ellsworth laughed and said, “…it was fantastic – people were out in shorts gardening and using a garden hose!”  To submit your entry, you are asked to send it by e-mail to Thera at twagner@petrolia.ca, or upload it to the Town of Petrolia Facebook Page, or entries may be dropped off at Town Hall during business hours or after hours in the mail slot.

Residents are advised that volunteers will be taking orders for new and exciting Petrolia and #PetroliaProud clothing including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, toques and scarves.
